Adventure Overview

If you want to immerse yourself in West African dance, music and culture, our dance trips to Guinea, West Africa are your dream vacations. After the country gained independence from France in 1958, it took special care to preserve the arts. As such, you will find a Maison de Jeunesse in each of Conakry’s neighborhoods that is filled with dancing and percussion almost every hour of the day.

Our coastal trip is based at the Mansare Family Compound in the capital of Conakry. There, you are hosted by Sarah Lee Parker Mansare, Mamady Mansare, other members of the Mansare family, and a team of Guinean artists.

While in Guinea, you will learn a variety of West African dances, songs and rhythms from members of Les Ballets Africains (the country’s preeminent performance group), as well as instructors from other dance companies. You will also have the chance to watch rehearsals and performances by other dance companies, visit local markets, and learn phrases in French, Malinke, and Susu.
Included in this trip are visits to the tropical island of Roume and to the village of Kindia where you will camp next to a waterfall and continue your dance and drumming classes.

  • Two dance classes and one drum class per weekday with fun, supportive and wildly talented teachers
  • Shopping for brightly colored fabrics at the local market
  • Turning those fabrics into amazing shirts, skirts or dresses with the resident tailor
  • Incredible West African meals prepared by our fabulous cook
  • Plenty of hangout time with musicians, dancers and the Mansare family
  • Dancing in the sand on a tropical island
  • Watching local dance and percussion performances

“My journey to the land of Guinea was truly life altering. I am not the same person I was before this experience and there’s not a day goes by that I don’t think of it. The people of Guinea are like no other. Strong, gentle, joyful, inclusive, spirited, a lightness of being – all in spite of crushing poverty and a lack of infrastructure to meet the most basic needs we tend to take for granted. Music and song are tightly woven into the fabric of everyday life in Guinea, a music that grabs your soul and holds you up in good times and bad!” – Ilona Berzups
